Instruction: Asking and Answering Questions (Literature)

Think It Through
In this activity, students read a text and ask and answer questions to improve their comprehension. They use answers to write an
explanation of how the questions helped them understand the story.
1. What question can you ask about the title? Where did you find the answer?
Answers will vary. Possible response: What is a heron? The first sentence tells readers that it is “a tall, big-beaked bird.”
2. What question can you ask that begins with who?
Answers will vary. Possible response: Who will win the race? The text says that “Heron sat proudly at the top of the tree,” so we
know that Heron won the race.
3. What question helps you understand the story? How does the question help?
Answers will vary. Possible response: Why are the two birds still friends? The story explains that Heron kept flying to the tree,
but Hummingbird kept stopping to enjoy the nectar. This tells us that Hummingbird likes nectar just as much as fish, and both
birds are happy with the result of the race.

Write It Out
Students were given the following instructions:
Write a paragraph that explains how your questions helped you understand the tale “The Heron and the Hummingbird.”
Use the questions and answers you gave in Think It Through to write your paragraph.
