Due:

Research Introduction

This week we will finish up our Drama Unit and begin a brief research project.  As we conclude our introduction to drama as a literary genre, we will practice 2-character plays.

This week as we move into Inquiry and Research, we will choose an animal topic and identify what we already know about the topic animal and list questions we want to explore.  We will use PebbleGo and other State-sponsored databases to support our inquiry.  The deliverable will be a brief video of fun facts.

We will also go back and reteach Author's Purpose and Sequencing.

Due:

Elements of Drama/Plays

This week we will begin to explore the elements of drama in literature.  Students will listen to and read plays as well as participate in a virtual play where students use a costume/mask, record their lines and submit their video recordings.  Then we can watch the blended/edited product.  I will receive all the individual parts and blend them together into a full-length production.

In Compass Learning, we will practice retelling details within a story.  This is an important reading skill that learners need to be explicitly taught and practice with feedback.  In the lessons assigned in Compass Learning this week, students will get an opportunity to deeply practice and develop retelling skills.

On Friday evening, May 8, we will have a virtual story hour/pajama party from 6:30-7:30.  Each first-grade student will receive a bag of microwave popcorn to enjoy during our story hour.  We will also explore virtual groups in Zoom.  Mark your calendar and plan to join us for Harvest First Grade Virtual Story Hour.

Due:

Continuation of Media and Persuasive Writing

This week we will continue with the understanding of media and it's impact on our lives and thoughts.  We will apply this understanding in a persuasive writing assignment.

We will also spiral back around to reteach aspects of main idea and author's purpose supported by Compass Learning assigned activities.  Our RAZ Kids reading assignments are designed to support social studies and science content areas but the real work for RAZ Kids is in the Reading Level Up.  Students' work in Level Up help progress to achieve their readiness for 2nd grade.

Also, this is the time of year to remind each other about GRIT.  Let's all get our GRIT on and have a happy and healthy productive week.

Huge Fondness...missing everybody a whole bunch!

Assignment

This week we will emphasize Earth Day in our reading activities while exploring concepts of media literacy including forms of communication and author's purpose.  In Social Studies, we will begin a unit exploring aspects of personal finance emphasizing basic vocabulary.  Please note that resources are migrating from Dojo to our Google Classroom.  Check us out with your child's District credentials to our Google Suite.

At this time of each school year, students and teachers closely monitor readiness for the next year.  This 4th quarter of the year is a very dynamic time because all the foundational skills that have been introduced throughout the year coincide with students' mastery of these along with an increase in stamina for applying new skills.  This is the time of year when students excel in development of these skills and experience tremendous growth.  This is the time of the year when students need to practice reading every day.  If your child is not practicing every day, that growth will not happen and they will not improve their readiness for advancement.  One of the most measurable factor of readiness for 2nd grade is the student's reading level.  The readiness reading level for 2nd grade is Level J.  If you do not know your child's reading level or if you are interested in discussing a review of your child's readiness, please choose a convenient opportunity to meet with me, please sign up for a Zoom conference.
